"And into the midst of these Actions, I interpose an entire Book, wherein there is, with all possible Veracity, a Collection made of Memorable Occurrences, and amazing Judgments and Mercies, befalling many particular Persons among the People of New-England."----Cotton Mather, Magnalia Christi Americana (London 1702)Throughout all of history, people have documented their activities, their "memorable occurrences," as a means of preserving the past, reflecting on the present, and imagining the future. In colonial America, Puritan ministers wrote lengthy treatises and sermons, or texts like Cotton Mather's Magnalia, a massive ecclesiastical history of the Massachusetts Bay colony, highlighting the eminent lives of its participants, including and most especially Cotton Mather himself. Today, we still have the inclination to preserve, reflect, and imagine, but in alternative ways and in new forms. This is my goal for my own electronic portfolio, itself an archive of my accomplishments, and a reflective learning tool for my present and future endeavors. As a Dean of Arts and Sciences, one of my key interests is to help students see the value of remembering and imagining, reflecting and planning.
